How to manually grade speaking and writing activities
IMPORTANT: For manual grading to work, TEACHERS MUST ASSIGN the activities to students.
In order for teachers to manually grade some of the speaking and writing activities within the platform, they will need to navigate to the Assignments section.
Within the Assignments section, you can:
- Filter assignments so that the ones displayed contain manual grading activities
- See at a glance how many assignments include manual grading by checking the Manual Grading column
- See at a glance the number of activities that require manual grading by clicking on the Manual Grading Playlist button
When you select a specific assignment and student to review, the screen below with a list of all the activities within the assignment appears:
The red pencil icon indicates that the activity needs to be manually graded by the teacher. Click on it to review the student’s answers and submit the score.
The green tick icon indicates that the activity has already been manually graded by the teacher. Click on the icon again to review and edit the score given.
— The hyphen indicates that the activity does not require your attention. It will automatically be graded by the platform.
If you prefer to only see the activities that require manual grading, then click on the Manual Grading Playlist button:
Activities will be classified by type:
Speaking activities – with audio recording. Click on the icon to review the student’s answers and submit the score.
Writing activities. Click on the icon to review the student’s answers and submit the score.
Once you select the activity you want to manually grade, the following window opens:
- Student name
- Assignment’s due date
- Activity name
- Eyeball to review student’s answers
- Score (x out of 10) – editable field where you need to grade the student
- Result – percentage based on the score field
- Notes – will be shared with the student
Once you insert the score and click on Submit, the activity will be graded and the student notified about the new grade.
THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Students enrolled in a teacher-led course that complete activities included as part of an assignment will receive the following message once the submit an activity that needs to be manually graded by the teacher:
Once the activity is submitted, if they navigate to the Grades section, they will see that the activity appears as completed – with the yellow progress bar above the activity name indicating so – but without a result and a clock icon that means that the activity is pending to be reviewed.
Once the teacher grades the activity, students will receive a notification message with a link to the activity and its score.
Students enrolled in a self-study course or in a teacher-led course that complete non-assigned activities will not receive any score for that activity as teachers will not be able to grade it. They will receive the following message once they launch an activity that needs to be manually graded by the teacher:
‘This activity requires manual review. You will not receive a score since the activity has not been assigned to you.’
