Creating Assignments
Offline Assignments
Instructors can use the Take this Assignment Offline option to disable an assignment without having to set available/due dates. This function will hide the assignment from the student’s view completely. On the assignments page, the Status column will display the Unassigned icon if the instructor has taken the assignment offline.
You can take an assignment offline by doing the following:
- Click the Assignments tab.
- Click on the assignment title you would like to take offline.
- Under Other actions, select Take this Assignment Offline.
Updating Assignment Due Dates
After you create an assignment, you can change its due date for all your students or for only an individual student.
Please note that you cannot modify the due date for a single assignment in a group.
CHANGE DUE DATES FOR ALL STUDENTS
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course with the assignment whose due date you want to change appears at the top of the page. If not, click the arrow to the right of the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the box to the left of the group of assignments or of individual assignments for which you want to change the due dates.
- Click Modify Dates.
- Enter or select new dates in the Available and Due columns.
- Click Save dates.

- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course with the assignments whose due date you want to change appears at the top of the page. If not, click the arrow to the right of the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the name of the group of assignments or of individual assignments for which you want to change the due dates.
- Click Modify Options for Assignments in Group, for Specific Students.
- Click the box to the left of the names of one or more students for whom you want to change the due dates and then click Continue.
- Enter or select new dates in the Available and Due columns.
- Click Save dates.
Changing the Number of Times a Student Can Take an Assignment
- You can update an individual assignment for all students.
- You can update an individual assignment for specific students.
- You can update a group of assignments for all students.
- You can update a group of assignments for specific students.
You cannot update the number of takes for a single assignment within a group.
Copying Assignments
You can copy assignments among courses so you can use them in multiple courses or reuse them in a new course.
- Go to MyELT. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course that you want to copy the assignment(s) from appears at the top of the page. If not, click the arrow to the right of the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the box to the left of the assignments or groups you want to copy.
- Click Copy. A confirmation message appears at the top of the page.
- Click the arrow to the right of the current title and select the course that you want to copy the assignment(s) to.
- Click Paste.
- If this is the only course you want to copy the assignments to, select Remove copied items from clipboard when pasted? and then click Paste selected items. Note: If you want to copy the same assignments to another course, do not select the Remove box. Instead, open the other course, and click Paste selected items again.
- View the assignments in the course you added them to.
Previewing Assignments as an Instructor
If you want to view an activity before adding it to your course, you can do so easily by following these steps:
Previewing Assignments as a Student
After creating an assignment, you can preview it by doing the following:
There is a known issue in MyELT that causes an error when trying to preview assignments as a student as described.
To work around this issue, instead of selecting Assignments, click on All Activities and preview the activity as an instructor.
Updating an Assignment
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.

- Make sure the title of the course with the assignment you want to modify appears at the top of the page. If not, click the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the name of the assignment whose dates you want to modify.
- Under Edit Assignment select Modify Some Assignment Options for Specific Students.
- Select the student(s) whose number of take you wish to modify and select Continue.
- Under Maximum Takes Allowed specify the number of takes in the text entry field and select Save dates.
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course with the assignment you want to modify appears at the top of the page. If not, click the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the name of the assignment whose dates you want to modify.
- Under Edit Assignment select Modify assignment options.
- Click the Takes allowed dropdown menu, change the number of times you want to let students try to do the assignment(s), and click Save.
Updating a Group of Assignments
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course with the assignment you want to modify appears at the top of the page. If not, click the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the name of the group whose dates you want to modify.
- Under Edit Group select Modify Options for Assignments in Group, for Specific Students.
- Select the student(s) whose number of take you wish to modify and select Continue.
- Under Maximum Takes Allowed specify the number of takes in the text entry field and select Save dates.
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course with the assignment you want to modify appears at the top of the page. If not, click the current title and select the correct course.
- Click the name of the group whose dates you want to modify.
- Under Edit Group select Modify options for all Assignments in Group.
- Click the Takes allowed dropdown menu, change the number of times you want to let students try to do the assignment(s), and click Save.
Assigning Activities
- Go to MyELT.heinle.com. Enter your username and password. Click Sign In.
- Click Assignments.
- Make sure the title of the course that you want to add the assignment to appears at the top of the page. If not, click the arrow to the right of the current title and select the correct course. Note: You must create a course before you can add an assignment to it.
- Click Assign Activities.
- Click the plus sign to the left of the book with the content you want to assign to see its Table of Contents.
- Click the box to the left of one or more units and/or activities you want to assign. If necessary, click the plus sign to the left of an item as many times as necessary until you see the material you want to assign.
- Click Continue.
- If you have selected multiple assignments, click OK when the confirmation message appears.
- Enter a name for the collection or “group” of units and activities you have created.
- Select Do Not Group Assignments if you want to display each unit or activity as a separate assignment instead of as a group to your students.
- Click the Takes allowed arrow and select the number of times you want to let students try the assignment(s).
- Set the date when you want to make the assignment(s) available to students and when it is due.
- When you are done, click Save.
- Review the summary of the assignment(s) you created. When you are done, click Return to go back to your main Assignments page.
Modifying a Group of Activities
Currently it is not possible to add activities to a group after you have created the group. You would need to delete the group and recreate it.
